The traditional Florida cracker style house is just 200 feet from the barn. A little-known fact about the origin of the Florida cracker house is, the cattle industry took root in Florida by the Spanish settlers during the Spanish-Colonial period. In the 1800’s ranches in Central and South Florida thrived in the cattle industry and continue to do so today. The cowboys that made the cattle industry what it is today were known as Cracker Cowboys because of the cracking sound of the bull whips they used. The horses they rode as well as the cattle they herded became known as cracker horses and cracker cattle. Even their homes were called cracker houses for their simplicity and ability to adapt to the harsh Florida environment. Enjoy the beauty of an updated Cowboy Cracker House at Grassy Run Ranch, complete with a wrap-around porch and exposed wood beams throughout the interior to allow Florida winds to cool the home through large vents at either end of the structure. Of course, today the house has been modernized with A/C, a nice feature in Florida! The Cowboy Cracker House has two bedrooms and two baths with a kitchen to make homemade favorites. Relax on the wrap-around-porch with a beverage of your choice and watch the day melt into night.
